I’ve just started my final working week for 2022. I’m wrapping up Thursday and won’t be back until the 4th of January.
When I worked for other people, I would always work between Christmas and New Year, to avoid burning through my precious annual leave. But for the last eight years, while I’ve been running my own business, I shut everything down until all the holidays are over.
In my line of work there’s no such thing as a (real) emergency over Christmas. Very few of my clients want to schedule anything or expect anything of me. I quite like the ‘clean break’ of no work at all, but that doesn’t mean I won’t dip my toe in if I get inspired.
It might be to note down some thoughts about a future blog post. Or an idea for the podcast. I might get inspired for a specific client project. I don’t mind when this stuff pops into my head – I just make sure it gets dropped into my task app and I continue with my break.
All that said, I might find myself in the office this year. I moved into new premises just a couple of weeks ago and I still have some setting up to do. So I might go in for a couple of hours, while the building is empty, file away some stuff and enjoy a quiet coffee. I’m incredibly happy with the new office – a significant upgrade on the old one, which was located on a University Campus.
Anyway, my task list for today won’t finish itself. Back to work – for a few days, at least.
